What makes us so different?

We take an experiential approach to training and learning in a warm, friendly, honest and safe atmosphere. Although we take our training very seriously we do love having fun.

"We're really looking forward to the next meeting - it is such a Wonderful experience connecting with all of you - I can't tell you how Valuable it is to us, and how much we enjoy spending time with such warmth and fun and friendliness in LMPs (Like-Minded People) like you : ) - Odile, Alester Gloucestershire."

You will leave training with practical hands on Information and Skills that you can take away and immediately use.

"I am just about recovered from what ( to be specific) I felt was both a personally and intellectually stimulating course.

For me It was the open and engaging nature of your own individual involvement that gave me the greatest learning experience and nurturing environment and I want to give you all my sincere thanks for that." Brian Bridgwater, Somerset

Both Bernard Barden and myself are experienced school counsellors and have been involved with children in and out of the care system.  Additionally between us, we have worked across all age groups and genre.

"I really enjoyed the course. It was really useful to work with a group of open and like-minded people on developing skills that will be useful for the rest of my working and private life. The techniques are brilliant and presented through a variety of methods to suit all learning styles. I felt as though I had the chance to take a concept on board, re-visit in and then practice a related technique which meant I left with information imprinted on my mind. A really well thought out and professionally run course." Amy Cornwall

Part of our involvement in this sector has involved us in co-ordinating NVQ programmes and developing training for underpinning knowledge. We will tailor courses to fit your requirements and maximise delegate enjoyment giving them a tool box that can be put to use immediately. One of the key outcomes of our courses is to instil a sense of empowerment in participants so they experience how that feels and to take it away to share with others.

Below are just some of the trainings we currently offer and are ideal CPD for counsellors or for those involved in the care of looked after young people and children.

Courses

Understanding Self Harm

Find out why people self harm, how it feels, what triggers it and much more. Understanding self harm assists in separating the person from the behaviour and empowering the onlooker to take a more understanding, non-judgemental view of this phenomenon. It can be so often heard when an onlooker encounters a self harmer - "I just don't understand why someone can do that to themselves" - we would like rectify this statement and give people the insight in order to understand a little more about the person who self harms. A self harmer needs as much support and understanding as possible. It is not attention seeking it is a deep seated plea for help

Working with survivors of Sexual Abuse

This is a very sensitive issue and as with all courses, every aspect of our training will be handled with the utmost confidentiality and sensitivity. We believe survivors or ‘thrivers' are special people and much of our own personal development can be attributed to this special group of people.

Learn the do's and don'ts and how inappropriate and insensitive counselling could be interpreted as re-abuse.  Study the long term effects of sexual abuse and the aftermath of a stolen childhood.

We will also use a case study to add insight into the world of the abuser and their distorted thinking and ‘grooming' techniques.

This is a very powerful and emotive subject and a must for all carers interested in effective child welfare.

Effective Communication

Communication can be improved to ease our passage through the day so we can feel heard, get our message across learn and discover one simple technique to eliminate Misunderstandings, tips to function in your relationships, at home or work, learn to communicate more effectively with children, learn how to use your body language, voice tone and the effective use of words to communicate clearly.

In a recent survey it was found that up to 42% of time spent at work was engaged in conflict resolution - phew that is an area that needs addressing!! Not only is it a blatant waste of resources, just imagine the human expenditure in energy and the effect on morale. Well the good news is effective communicators are more likely to have the soft skills needed to resolve conflict. Well that's a relief!

Meeting yourself (why do you do what you do the way you do?)

Do you really know what motivates you? Do you really own your own beliefs and values? How much of your mind is truly conscious and do you really know the reasoning behind your behaviours and thoughts?

Watch your thoughts; they become your words

Watch your words; they become your actions

Watch your actions; they become your habits

Watch your habits; they become your character

Watch your character: it becomes your destiny

Are you aware of the language you use? Have you heard someone say "this job is a pain in backside"

"it's a pain in the neck"

"it breaks my heart..."

"it's just a constant battle.."

This module gives you the chance to explore in detail who you really are and the opportunity to meet yourself

Life story work

As children in care are moved between homes and systems they can easily lose their sense of identity.

Children who are moved constantly; taken out of the home; taken out of school, can be left with an overwhelming sense of disempowerment and can easily loose their sense of identity.

Life story work can give them a strong sense of self and belonging. Used sensitively this can be a powerful tool for restoring dignity to fragile egos.

We feel strongly that it is fundamental when working with children to give them back their dignity and self respect as often as possible, reinforcing the fact that they can have some say in their life by giving them as much access to information that fills in as many gaps as possible, and one way is using Life Story Work.

We work experientially sharing ways of working ‘differently and creatively' using art work from drawing time lines, sand tray work, masks and materials such as play doe and making collages. The use of art materials accesses parts of the brain "that other methods do not reach"!

Although this method of working is powerful and often moving it can also be enjoyable and creative restoring self respect and more of a ‘life' purpose'. When children are seen and heard they become more positively motivated and positively motivated children are happier to conform socially.

Introduction to NLP

Developed by Richard Bandler and John Grinder NLP is quickly becoming the buzz word in business and therapy.  It is an amalgam of successful tried and tested approaches welded together as one effective ‘science'.  NLP is the study of excellence and the one of the most effective ways of giving people new perspectives. It draws on the collective knowledge of some of the most effective communicators of our time and has brought positive change to many that practice it.

This course is of the highest quality NLP training running over a four day training program on the core skills and principles of NLP.  Participants will enjoy intensive experiential training in powerful NLP techniques and tools that they can draw upon in everyday life.

The course content has been put together by top INLPTA trainers and upon graduation you will have been taught how to:

  • Turn goals into well-formed outcomes to get what you want
  • Read body language (more than 80% of communication is non-verbal)
  • Fine tune your senses and make better distinctions in what you see, hear and feel
  • Identify your own and others' preferred language patterns
  • Embody the presuppositions of NLP such as 'there is no failure only feedback
  • Give and receive positive feedback
  • Create or recreate peak states - store your resources using anchors
  • Build and improve relationships by creating rapport
  • Discover the filters through which we experience reality
  • Discover how you structure time and how to place clear goals in your future
  • How an external event causes an internal representation

This popular course assumes no prior knowledge of NLP.  As with all our NLP training it is practically based and designed to equip you with a whole host of ‘hands on' skills to apply to your life immediately.

Introduction to Listening and Rapport Skills

Learn skills in listening that will help you get more information, discover powerful techniques that gain rapport and aid communication, find out why empathy is such a powerful skill. These skills can be used to great effect in every area of you life from your Home environment to your Work environment.

This course is designed for anyone who comes into contact with customers or clients, be it by ‘phone, email or face to face. You will learn how to

  • Really hear what the other is and is not saying
  • Enter their model of the world, walk in their shoes
  • Communicate in ways that get you seen and heard
  • Gain and give respect and recognition

Managing Stress

Learn the biology and Psychology of stress.  The do's the don'ts and the myths that go with them. Learn how we simply aren't designed for today's life style and how we need to adapt to survive. Learn how we slid from cavemen to ‘raveman' and what we need to do to cope. More importantly we need to realise that unresolved stress could have serious physical and psychological implications for all our futures.

When the stress levels go up so do the levels of absenteeism - stress is easy to manage and when managed holistically and supportively, productivity goes up, moral goes up, motivation goes up. On average we spend as much time at work as home, lets make it a more pleasant and rewarding experience and put the word enjoyable back into work.

The creative use of ANGER - is the Anger Monster around?

This is an experiential workshop using Art and Movement, designed to access and learn techniques to respond creatively to anger and identify the triggers that turn on the Anger switches. Anger is okay it's what we do with it and how we choose to channel that Anger that is important.

This is my favourite workshop since it deals with one of the most un-talked about emotions, if suppressed it can lead to poor health, antisocial behaviour and many other undesirable outcomes. Unresolved Anger has a curious way of leaking out even when it wants to hide. We look at the Anger Monster and make friends with this amazingly creative emotion.

Anger has a positive up side and conversely a negative destructive side. We will take a good look at owning our own Anger, which can be the turning point in living a More Stress Free Life. Prisons are full of people who can testify to the less positive aspects of being Ms or Mr ANGRY!

We encourage people to get in touch with their anger and learn to express that anger in a positive and creative way. The suppression of anger leaks out in behaviours such as sabotage, sarcasm, bullying, silence, outbursts, sudden acts of violence to name but a few.

Through the use of visual art and movement people are given the opportunity to channel anger creatively and safely.  Anger is a source of our energy, and when expressed through appropriate forms can expand our creative potential.

Sitting on our feelings in general dampens our creative fire. Learn a simple movement structure that releases anger and assertion easily and positively.

A time-tested method developed and used by Caroline Born for over 15 years that releases lots of energy.

  • "It was amazing to be expressing anger so cleanly and that it felt safe at last. That was incredibly profound for me. Caroline embodies the work so well - there is a tremendous sense of ease and holding"

Ruth Jenni, musician.
